GWRRA VA Chapter Y Website Tips and How-To

Here is a book containing various tips and information to help you use the GWRRA VA Chapter Y website. This book is collaborative effort containing pages from chapter members as they discover tips and tricks they would like to share.

Getting Started

The new GWRRA CH Y Website is highly interactive. Please click on all the buttons and the links, explore, and enjoy. Add blogs, stories, and photos when and where you can!

If you find something broken on the site or you want to see something different or new, then please email "CWM Eric W" right away using the site's own Private Message feature or email our "WebMaster" inside the "Contact Us" button. This will help us fix and improve our site. This website is exceptionally different than most sites you'll ever use. Our WebMaster, Eric Waller built it just for you! Make this your browser's home page!

Can't visit the website everyday? Alternatively, if you keep all of the email notification settings "enabled" in your "My Account" section, at its second and third tabs, then the website will automatically email you when something changes or when a post is made to one of your special interest groups. With all notifications "enabled" or turned on, you don't really have to visit this website everyday, as you will get a message in your everyday-email box telling you when something has changed! Way Kool! Please use these features in "My Account."

The "events" button opens a monthly calendar. And, upcoming events in the near future are listed along the right side of the front page. And, for a quick summary, you can use the "Happenings!" menu at the left side of the front page for a "linear" calendar view of Chapter Y Events and Rides. Letting you know in three different formats helps you
never to miss a wonderful CH Y social event or great ride!

CAPTCHA - What the heck is a captcha?

Recently I was asked why there is a challenge on the website to determine if you are a human or computer. I know it sounds silly that our website cannot tell the difference. And, in the end, why would the website care?

Well, a few weeks back, shortly after going live, we began to get postings to our Guestbook multiple times a day of an "unsavory" nature. These postings weren't coming from a person but rather from one or more of the millions of infected "bot" computers on the Internet. These computers are running programs that their owners are unaware of and worse completely under the control of another person. All of these computers scan the Internet for websites that will allow anonymous (meaning not logged in) users to post content, such as our Guestbook and our Contact Us email link.

Needless to say, this content was highly inappropriate for a GoldWing site. And, we need to keep in mind that our chapter could be held liable for the content we display even if it was posted through no fault of our own. One of the tools available to battle these zombie computers is to use a "captcha". A what-a? A captcha is a simple, non-sensical, question and answer that only a human could figure out and provide. By providing the correct answer, you have reasonable certainty that a human was posting this information. By the way, CAPTCHA stands for "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart." Just in case you were wondering. ;)

Since putting the captcha in place, the unsavory content postings have stopped. This is what happens when you invite the entire world to your doorstep!

If you have any further question on this topic, please post replies and I will answer as soon as possible.

Thanks,
Eric, Your Webmaster

How to Sign Up for Events and Rides

How to "Sign Up" for Events and Rides:

At a Chapter Social Gathering, I was asked if you must "logon" to the Chapter Y Website to "Sign Up" for chapter rides and events. The answer is, "Yes."

You "sign up" to let the point of contact know that you plan to attend the ride or event. This helps us immensely to size the ride or event, decide on places to stop for lunch, give "head counts" to restaurants and tourist places, etc. If you don't sign up this way, then please give the ride or event coordinator the courtesy of an RSVP phone call or email.

If you know your Chapter Y Website Username and Password, then when you visit the Chapter website, please logon. You can tell your browser to remember your username and password so that the next time you browse the Chapter website, your browser will automatically log you on. No money is transacted on our website, so you should not feel any security threat.

If you don't know your username and password for the Chapter Y Website, please email the Website Content Manager for a new set--it's that simple. (Click Here.)

Setup Your Notifications

Our website can notify you by email anytime new content is added. Notifications are once per day and you can chose whether you want to know about new content and new comments separately.

You also have the option of controlling how much is sent in each email. You can receive just the title, the title and some teaser text, or the full content. Each item contains a link that will take right to the content so you can read or comment.

This feature will help you stay up to date with all the information and happenings related to our chapter. So try it out and let us know what you think!

To enable notifications:

That is all there is to it. You will now receive a once-a-day email with any new content, comments, or announcements!
